C’s Survival Story

“I was born and raised in Fort Myers, FL. At the age of 5 years, I was molested by my mother’s boyfriend. One day when I was a little older, some friends and I were playing hide-and-go-seek near an empty house. I ran into it to find them and, unfortunately, some guys in the ‘hood were in the abandoned house and they raped me. I eventually started abusing crack cocaine, which led me down a grim and violent path of abuse. I was kidnapped, violently assaulted and nearly killed by a serial rapist. It was during this time that I found out I was HIV-positive. By March 2002, I became critically ill with Neurosyphilis and Pneumocystis pneumonia. I made a new commitment to myself in that moment to turn my life around. I began taking my medicines faithfully and I am now healthy and doing well. I eventually became a HIV Peer Educator and Tester. Today, I can say I am a living miracle. I have been living positively one day at a time and I have been undetectable for 20 years! I am living my life clean and without drugs for 10 years. I learned to love me first. There is truly a light at the end of the tunnel. I know this, because I followed that light and I am a survivor.”
